For both employees who spend considerable amounts of time working in walk-in freezers and business owners looking to grant their workers that extra security, a simple and cost-effective way to improve the working day is making a conscious choice about the footwear used while on the job. Especially in a fast-paced restaurant environment, slips and spills can be costly accidents. And with so much time spent moving around on one’s feet, why not make the investment in a product that’s not only safe but also comfortable? There are plenty of options to choose from while scoping out the best choices, but here are the things that are most important to consider while making the decision.
Consider what will be most comfortable for the working environment. A warehouse filled with walk-in freezers, for instance, will require that employees wear cold-resistant gear for most of the shift, and it might make sense to emphasize insulation at the cost of some added bulkiness. A small restaurant, on the other hand, may just require a few visits to the freezer each day. In this case, having a few pairs of booties or slippers available in multiple sizes should be adequate as the primary goal of the purchase will be to minimize the risk of falls while on the job.
You may also want to consider the sort of sole on the footwear you utilize in walk-in freezers. While plenty of companies carry lines of cold-resistant work boots, those may not be the best choice if your employees are constantly moving between mixed-use areas—you don’t want unnecessary wear and tear on the floors, or to end up worrying about debris being tracked around your restaurant. Consider brands that offer a variety of choices for work shoes, such as slippers or overshoes that allow employees to keep wearing their normal footwear but with the added security of a slip-resistant and insulated shell.
